A New Mexico Adventure - Day 1!

November 13, 2015 ~ One of the states we haven't been to is New Mexico so in an effort to get it crossed off our bucket list we grabbed our momma's and hopped a plane! Yep, we took both of our momma's on an adventure to see a place we have never been to! Talk about making memories... shew wee!

We arrived in Albuquerque, New Mexico around 4:00 PM so we didn't have a lot of daylight to see as much as we would like. Since Albuquerque is known for their balloon festivals one of our very first stops was the Anderson-Abruzzo International Balloon Museum! Sadly we arrived just as they closed but I managed to grab a few pictures of the outside!

Really wish we could have visited this place as I know there is a lot of history inside!

Next stop would be the Thunderbird Harley-Davidson ..... You know the drill!
(Have to pick up a shirt for my pops!)

Since we struck out on finding somewhere cool to tour we figured we would try our luck at the casino! This place was very clean, up-to-date and the funny thing... you couldn't have any alcohol on the game floor! Crazy! The staff was really nice and after we played a few slot machines it was time to try their buffet for dinner! (Sorry I didn't get any pictures of the inside... I was chasing Mommy-Dearest and my momma when they got away from the group!)

So everyone that knows me will know that I am a very picky eater.... Surprise, surprise! The food was good but very different from what I am used to eating. (I mean these people love some green chili!) I did find one thing that I absolutely loved... Watermelon and cantaloupe juice. Now before y'all get to making that crazy wrinkled nose face this stuff was amazing! It was a juice that had no pulp but tasted just like they squeezed a fresh watermelon or cantaloupe. It was amazing! Add a little salt to the mix, close your eyes and it was like a hot summer day!

It was time to check into our hotel for a little shut eye! Little did we know it was the Western Music Association Festival and about 90% of our hotel was the people who traveled in for this! It was fun to see everyone all dressed up in their western wear and singin', pickin' and a grinnin'! Sadly we missed their nightly performances but did hear a few of them practicing!

I will have to brag on the hotel staff as they made sure that if there was anything we needed to please let them know. Mommy-Dearest had to smoke (imagine that) and it was cold outside so we left her out there and the manager offered to get us all hot chocolates to warm up. If you ever visit Albuquerque I would recommend staying here! Clean rooms, spacious and great hospitality!

Veterans Day Virtual 5k

November 11, 2015 ~ Momma, Ashley and I knocked out one final virtual 5k for Veteran's Day! This one was put on by Vacation Races Virtual Race Series and called "Veterans Day Virtual 5k/10k". Just one more way to show our support to our military men and women. With the crazy weather that Mid-Missouri is expected to receive later today we wanted to make sure we got this one done on Veterans Day! (If I haven't said it before then I'll tell you now... I really love walking with my momma and sister!)

Thank you to the men, women and their families that have served their country!
We honor you and salute you not only today but every day!
Check out some of the other races they have coming up:

Everyone that registered for this race receives:

A sweet looking t-shirt, custom finisher medal (can't wait to see this) and a personalize race bib!

Thank you and Happy Veterans Day!

Honor Everywhere 360 Virtual Reality

November 11, 2015 ~ Veteran's Day is a day that we honor the men and women of our armed services who have served to protect our country as well as those who continue to serve but not only today but every day. Today was an extra special Veteran's Day because a 360 video titled "Honor Everywhere" was released this morning.

What is Honor Everywhere 360?

Honor Everywhere 360 is a Virtual Reality experience for Veterans not able to physically travel to see their memorials in Washington, DC. We are losing our WWII Veterans at a rate of 500 a day nationwide and sadly, most will die before they have the chance to see their memorials. The Honor Everywhere experience is free and available via an app. All you need to view the experience is Google Cardboard and a newer smart phone.  Honor Everywhere 360 is a collaboration with Central MO Honor Flight, Jaunt Studios, Google, Ghost Machine VR and Story Up Studios.

For details on how to share the experience with a Veteran you know, please visit: http://honoreverywhere.com/

Who does it serve?

Honor Everywhere 360 serves everyone but specifically it serves as another option for our veterans to see their respective memorials in Washington, D.C. When a veteran is too sick or frail to fly on an honor flight this technology brings the memorials to them. It is so realistic that for the 8 minutes they are watching they don't realize they are still in their home or perhaps in  nursing home or hospital room instead they feel as if they are standing at the various memorials.

How can I get Honor Everywhere 360?

We are very excited to be able to get this video in the hands of many wonderful volunteers willing to download this free app on their smartphone (iPhone and Android phones) and share with our veterans.  First and foremost, we would first like to encourage you to reach out to an Honor Flight hub near you by visiting https://www.honorflight.org/national-hubs/ and encourage veterans to sign up for an Honor Flight if they are able.
(Honor Everywhere 360 is intended for those who are unable to travel on an honor flight.)

If you have veterans unable to travel on an honor flight, then Honor Everywhere 360 would be the next best thing for them to see their memorial. We ask that you order Google Cardboard by visiting the following website: https://www.google.com/get/cardboard/get-cardboard/ . This cardboard viewer is what makes this video come to life and work properly. (You won't be able to watch the video properly or as it is intended to use without it) This Google Cardboard costs $23.95 and if this is something that you or your business can not afford, please let us know so that we can ship you one from a very limited supply that we have.

The next thing you will need to do is download the free Honor Everywhere 360  from Jaunt VR in the app store on your smartphone.  (This app is currently available for both iPhone and Android)

Instructions to download the app.
1. On your newer version smartphone, go to the app store like Apple App Store or Google Play on Android phones.
2. Search “Jaunt VR” (This is where the Honor Everywhere video is)
3. Click on the thumbnail to download the free app.
4. After it downloads (It's best to use Wi-Fi to download the app), locate the Jaunt VR app icon on your smartphone.
5. Press the app icon.
6. “Honor Everywhere 360” should be on the top and press that video.
7. Turn the phone to the side and slide it into your Google Cardboard device.
8. Make sure you had headphones or ear buds plugged into your phone for the Veteran to hear the experience.
9. The video lasts about 8 minutes.
If you have problems downloading the app, please contact Sarah Hill at story1up@gmail.com.

Once you receive your Google Cardboard and you have downloaded this app, you are ready to go! Everything should be very simple from this point and if you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Michele Spry at 2mspry@gmail.com

We need as many volunteers as possible to get this video in the hands of our veterans and help to spread the word about this new technology. Do you know of a nursing home, hospital, public library that might be able to help us show this video to our veterans? Please feel free to share this blog post or ask them to go to the website http://honoreverywhere.com/ to find out more information.

Here is another story that was just released today about Honor Everywhere 360 from ABC News:

The Honor Run Virtual 5k

November 10, 2015 ~ Momma and I decided to take advantage of a beautiful afternoon and knock out another one of our Veteran's Day themed virtual 5k's! This one is called "The Honor Run" and was put on by Best Race Bling - Miles for Medals.

The Honor Run benefits House of Heroes, Arizona, which is a chapter of a national organization dedicated to helping families of service members and peace officers in times of need.  All participants earn this beautiful custom  medal featuring a representation of Old Glory and the Bald Eagle.

It's truly an honor to support and give thanks to our veterans that have served our country. We certainly stand behind you and appreciate everything you do for us!

This race has sold out but visit their website for other medals and charities they support!

Fancy Formal 5k

November 8, 2015 ~ Back on October 18, 2015 the Midway Walkie Talkies put on the Fancy Dress 5k and one of the ladies that attended our event loved this idea so much that she wanted to do something very similar for her community! I was so excited to cheer Courtney Ray on in her effort to get women (and men together) to walk 3.1 miles in their fanciest outfits down Main Street and across the Boonville bridge and back along with 44 other awesome people while laughing and enjoying the day! The best part.... giving back to the Boonville Food Pantry!

This is my new friend Phyllis! She had one heck of a pace going on and I did my best to catch up to her. Once I did we kept it going and I loved walking along side her! What a beautiful woman inside and out! Thanks Phyllis for letting me tag along!

Such a perfect day for a wonderful organization! I am so proud of the hard work and dedication put into pulling off an event like this but as you can see Courtney rocked it! This event raised 339.7 pounds of food for the Boonville Food Pantry.... High five y'all!

Honoring Those Who Served Virtual 5k

November 9, 2015 ~ Tonight we completed another virtual 5k! This one was put on by Will Run For Bling and called "Honoring Those Who Served" and 1 of several for Veteran's Day coming up on November 11th. You had your choice of completing a 5k (3.1 miles), 10k (6.2 miles), 13.1 miles or 26.2 miles for this race. I loved signing up for these races with my mom and sister and really love having others join us in our walks! (Thank you Pam McMahan and Suzanne Jackson for joining us... we've missed you!)

This walk tonight was in honor of our courageous military men and women who have served, currently serving or have recently signed up to serve our country.... we thank you. We realize that freedom isn't free and we appreciate all that you do and will continue to do while protecting our country.

This race benefits the following charity:
The Bob Woodruff Foundation is dedicated to ensuring injured service members, veterans and their families are thriving long after they return home. They fund innovative programs in communities where veterans, their families and caregivers live and work.

This race is still open if you are interested in registering.
Visit the website below for more information!

I Want To Be Someone's Fitspiration....

November 8, 2015 ~ Anyone that has read my blog will see that this year has been full of completing several live and virtual races. My original goal for this year was to complete 15 5k's in 2015 but this sounds too simple for me so I decided that my goal of this would be (5) 5k's would be in Columbia, MO, (5) 5k's would be in surrounding towns outside of Columbia, MO and (5) 5k's would be out of state. In true Michele Spry fashion this would be easy and fun until I was turned on to virtual races by Jacki Swank!
We have all said it or even heard it. You know... the "I need to loose some weight" conversation. When I heard this multiple times from both my momma and my sister it was time to help. No need to join a gym and not ever go or starve yourself just to loose a few pounds. Instead we began a walking regimen and would pledge to walk every night. This started back in July 2015 and we began to recruit several ladies from my sisters neighborhood to join in on this nightly adventure. I am certainly not a runner however if I ever complete a race on my own I would push myself to try for a great time or simply to know that I still had it in me to do my best. Since my mom and sister are not runners we would take a different approach and take these nightly opportunities to walk and talk. It not only made walking fun but it kept us focused while allowing almost anyone to join us. The goal was to walk 3.1 miles, a 5k, and while we weren't fast we would get-it-done! Would this simple routine alone make the pounds fall off? Absolutely not, but it's a great start!

I did a blog post on Virtual Races and tried my best to explain them and you can see it here:

Do the medals really mean anything? Not at all however it is a way to give back to many great charities and those medals become a reminder that you are doing your part to help while doing something good for yourself. The best part of becoming more active is that I get to spend time with two people that I absolutely love with my whole heart... my momma and my sister!

This past Sunday in the Columbia Daily Tribune there was a story in the Pulse Section. This story was written by Lifestyle Editor Caroline Dohack who overheard me telling someone that I wanted to do 40 5k's next year for my 40th Birthday. She asked me more about this and I was honored that she would write about me. In life we do most things for a reason or a purpose. Next year as I begin my new age bracket (I won't turn 40 until August 2nd) I want 2016 to be a memorable and purposeful year really thinking about things I do and organizations I support.
(Yes I have already warned my momma and my sister - LOL!)

While this year I got a little crazy with the virtual races next year will be crazy too! Not only will I complete 40 5k's next year we will hopefully cross off "Seeing the United States" as well. Currently Brandon and I have 11 states left to visit on this wild adventure that started a few years back. It's my way of squeezing in my goal of traveling while I drag him along! What happens after we see all of the United States one might ask? We will focus on a few places we would like to go back and visit and stay a little longer. (Many of our travels have us taking in multiple states in a very short amount of time - just long enough to see things and possibly want to go back. We have no desire to ever go overseas or out of country but certainly won't say we will never. (We have been to Mexico twice)  I just wanted to make memories with Brandon and see what all our United States had to offer. I feel as if I couldn't fully appreciate our country if I didn't embrace every state. It has forced us to see states that we wouldn't normally visit but the really cool part of that is there is something fun, interesting/unique and educational in every single state!

I know it seems crazy crossing off some hefty items on my bucket list and although I certainly don't plan on going anywhere anytime soon this seems like the best time. We don't have kids, we both work and we are in good health. When we get older and think about retiring (many years down the road) who says we will have money, have good health or that the world is safe enough to travel?  I want to see these things now and always hold those memories and pictures for a lifetime. Do I recommend creating debt to cross things off your bucket list? Absolutely not! Do what you can afford and set a goal for yourself and try to reach it. Sometimes you will and sometimes you won't but you certainly can't try if you don't have something to set your eyes on.

It's just like walking. I hear so many excuses and I do know we are all busy.
News Flash: You have to make time.

I hate the thought of joining a gym.
Great then don't! While some people need the gym to help them reach their fitness goals with friends, fitness trainers and even classes many don't. Step outside your office and/or your house/apartment... that's the biggest gym at your finger tips and it doesn't cost a dime! You can ride a bike, walk, hike, swim, jog or dance your way to a healthy lifestyle!

What if you walked one mile every single day? By committing to this goal you have just done so much for your body because you choose to become active. You might even find yourself walking more than a mile or possibly trying to jog/run! Remember: A 16-minute mile is still the same as a 6-minute mile.

I hate the thought of putting on work out clothes.
Great then don't! Wear something that you are comfortable in. It's not about everyone else and what they think it's simply about you! In the beginning it will be tough but within a couple weeks you will gladly put on something even more comfortable. There is no need to purchase new shorts, tank tops, etc. all you need is a loose pair of shorts or pants (heck I wear jeans a lot of times in the cooler temps) and a t-shirt.... oh and a comfy pair of tennis shoes.... you want your feet comfortable! This isn't a fashion show it's about getting active.

I don't have anyone to walk with me.
Great then get out there anyway! While it's always easier to have someone or even several someone's with you don't let that be your excuse holding you back. You are doing this for you. Often times I have gone to the mall and walked which is safe and easier if I am by myself. Get creative on how you can still get your daily goal.

I have health issues that won't allow me to walk far.
No problem! Do the best you can and if you set a goal and it takes several breaks to get it done then you do the best you can! Just taking the time to try and be active with any obstacles that might be in your way is a huge. Be proud and don't give up!

You have a ton of energy and I want to be as active as you are.
Well sugars, every single person is different. While it's great to set goals try to set realistic goals that you can reach and then set new goals. The best part of life is that we are all uniquely different (I mean if we were all the same it would be boring) and I will say that I love the different qualities that we bring out in each other. While my energy level is high it doesn't mean that I don't struggle with keeping focused and active as well. I push myself all the time but one of these days I suppose I will wake up and my body will be like "Oh no you aren't pushing me today!" Hopefully that won't be for a long while but while you set these goals you also need to listen to your body. If you don't take care of you then how can you expect to encourage others?

Bottom line is that it takes all of us to encourage one another to do our best each and every day. While some days I need motivation from others then other days I give motivation. Life is about give and take while having balance. No matter who your inspiration comes from hug them and do your best to inspire others!

Now get outside and enjoy the day!
